If you watched the Nintendo Direct mini today you probably saw at the end of the direct that Atlus has in the works not one but TWO Shin Megami Tensei games coming to Nintendo Switch in 2021!
To quickly summarize the premise of this series, the game takes place in Tokyo, Japan somewhere in the future where demons have somehow invaded the city and as a result the entire world is at war with itself.
You play as a self-named character whose goal is to establish a new world and making certain decisions to influence the outcome of that world. You meet different kinds of demons/monsters and use them to fight other demons and create new demons using a strange fusion process.
The game itself works as a turn based rpg using different elements such as identifying weaknesses of monsters and using the right kind of demon for each battle. While both Persona and SMT tend to revolve around similar gameplay, SMT has been well known to be much more difficult in terms of gameplay and takes a much darker tone in terms of story and characters.
While V has been talked about for some time now, the announcement of SMT III getting a remaster on the switch is certainly a nice surprise to follow up SMT V also coming to Nintendo Switch.
While the release dates aren’t specifically clear we do know that SMT III will release sometime in the Spring next year as well as SMT V releasing sometime in 2021.
As someone who has only just started getting into the SMT/Persona series I’m pretty happy knowing that I’ll get to experience more of this wonderful series and hopefully more of the titles will find their way into my library.
You can definitely expect me to be streaming both of these titles once they release!
