Phantasy Star Online 2: My favorite new addiction (And how you can get addicted too!)

Hey everyone! Sorry it’s been a minute since my last post. A lot of life issues and moving and all that. Regardless, gaming has kept me going through it all and let me tell ya, I found that feeling of gaming like there’s no tomorrow with this one.

For those that haven’t heard of it, there’s an mmorpg that has been out for 8 years that recently came to the West from good ol’ Japan. Yes you can also download it for free… from the Microsoft store… we won’t get into that but let me gush a little about this game.

So PSO2 (You know the title) is an MMORPG that focuses on exploring the vastness of space and advancing civilization with a combined fleet of different classes/races for the betterment of all. Seems straightforward right? Well the game itself gets pretty technical and I love that there are so many different combat mechanics, and crafting, and sociability of the community and the amount of customization/years of content… it makes my mouth WATER

It’s funny too because I remember many years ago my first experience with the Phantasy Star series was actually from the Xbox 360 when they released Phantasy Star Universe.

This game had amazing combat, pretty cool story and setting and allowed tons of crazy customization and playstyles.

This is also the case with PSO2 but with MOAR CONTENT AND EXCITEMENT AND A GREAT PLAYER BASE AND :LKAJSDOPIAEJRLK:SDJFL:SKHDF

Sorry… this game has got a firm grip.

PSO2 has about 9 nine classes to start with and 3 extra classes once you max out a class allowing for a large amount of replay-ability along with being able to have a sub-class so your character can essentially be two classes at once.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE

In addition to that you can also change your class at ANY TIME to further enhance the capabilities of your character. Started as a hunter but want to try using ranged weapons? Just switch over to ranger and give that grenade launcher thing a try!

And there’s more than just combat, need a break from all the crazy hype and action? Go chill at the casino or grab some cool house items and decorate your place for others to come visit!

The casino, like many vibrant places to gamble, will make you feel happy and angry at the same time!

With all this to look at and try for yourself, there is one decision that many might struggle with when deciding how they want to play this game… Which server to pick?

The game has been a traditional staple in Japan since it’s release and thus the Japanese server will be much more ahead in terms of content and still retaining a very nice player base… of course most people in North America would normally opt for the NA servers because most players will speak English right?

There is actually a group of people that have dedicated themselves to creating a patch program that will almost entirely translate the Japanese version into English known as PSO2 Tweaker from the group Arks-Layer. They even have a discord that will help all new players get the game running and helping to improve the game itself for those wishing to play on the Japanese version.

Don’t worry though because they also have NA groups if you still wish to play on those respective servers.

Now I would also suggest looking up some guides on youtube (This is the one I used!) on how to download the game if you go for the Japanese servers as it does require you to navigate some hiragana/katagana, which there are many resources to help you get there!

My major gripe with all this is that I’m in a personal problematic situation where my microsoft store suffers from a bug that won’t allow it to open (A known Microsoft bug that I confirmed after calling tech support) and therefore the only way to play the game for me at least is through the JA server

I’ll be honest though, I’m already in love with this game and the fact that I’ve met plenty of people who speak English in this game hasn’t really affected my enjoyment… as someone who is studying Japanese I actually find the mix of Japanese and English to be an experience that the NA version could never give me.

Ok I’ve spent enough time here, my gamer urges are pulling me back into the vastness of pure phantasy (see what I did there?) oh and before I go, if you decide to give the JA servers a shot, Ship 2 tends to be where a lot of English players are and come from the discord. Add me (Ghesh) and I’ll get you in with some of the coolest people you could ever game with 😉

As always,

Brother Ghesh out~
