Resident Evil 3 REMAKE Review (PC)

Hey everyone! Today I’ll be reviewing Resident Evil 3 on PC!

If you already read my review of RE2: Remake you probably assumed I’d also be reviewing this game…. you would be right.

With that being said, there might not be as much to say since this game draws off the same engine as RE2 and therefore offers many similar gameplay elements, but nonetheless let’s get to it.

Game-play

As I mentioned above, RE3 draws off of the same engine as 2. So the over the shoulder camera with slow controls but a quick turn feature all return in 3.

Things such as ammo/item crafting and the classic inventory management system remain unchanged from RE2.

One big addition to RE3 however is the dodge mechanic.

Hate going around those zombies? Just press a button and they’re no longer a threat!

For those that are interested in speed running this game, this feature will make for some valuable time skips if you can perform it correctly. Mindlessly spamming this ability does have it’s drawbacks including having a delay in movement and being unable to press it again.

If you watch the image above you’ll also notice that a brief flash occurs during the roll, this indicates you performed a “perfect” dodge and if you aim just after dodging, time slows down and all damage you do is significantly increased.

Like RE2, there are two playable characters and both characters have different forms of dodging, which I’ll cover later on.

Another aspect to RE3 is after you complete the game there are additional difficulties including Nightmare and Inferno for extra enemies, more difficult enemies and less ammo resources. To counter this, there is an item shop where you can buy over powered weapons and items to help with these difficulties, however you can opt to not use the items if you desire that challenge.

I did like the added mods to weapons like in RE2 but they added more possibilities which is a nice upgrade

Some of the mods are found by simply exploring the game, but a few of them can come from defeating Nemesis where he will drop a briefcase, but don’t wait too long as he will still chase you after he drops it!

Story

In Resident Evil 3, you play as Jill Valentine, a S.T.A.R.S member of Raccoon City Police Department. The game is pretty quick at throwing you into the fray as Nemesis chases Jill (That scary guy above) out of her apartment and essentially through the entire game (minor spoilers going ahead). The reason for Nemesis attacking Jill specifically is revealed as you uncover the reasons as to why the virus was created and how it got so out of hand.

The other character that you play as is Carlos Oliveira, a specialist from the Umbrella Task Force whose mission is to assist in evacuating people from Raccoon City, despite his standing though, Carlos is innocent to the evil schemes at hand.

Carlos (left) and Jill (right)

One quick note, as I mentioned earlier both characters have a unique dodge ability with Jill having a literal dodge and Carlos having a counter-attack that allows him to perform the thing that everyone likes to yell out… anyway I’ll let you discover that one.

The two progress through the game attempting to evacuate everyone from the city while trying to stop the spread of the virus and there are even some segments that precipitate the events of RE2 if you pay attention 😉

The final enemy ends up being more than just a hulking Zombie that can somehow wield a rocket launcher… but you’ll have to see it for yourself!

Music

There isn’t much to say about this part other than it does a great job at giving you the chills as you nervously walk down dark hallways and tight corners trying not to scare yourself to death.

My only gripe was that they didn’t include the original soundtrack like they did in RE2 but nonetheless, Metamorphosis was hands down my favorite track in RE3.

Graphics

Like with music, there isn’t much to say here other than it still looks gorgeous and the zombies look hideous as can be with their faces practically falling off and the Nemesis transformations will be the stuff of nightmares… also these fish guys are Fuuuuugly (in a great way!)

Multiplayer

The last part of this review covers something I actually talked about in a previous article here but I’ll mention it briefly here as well. The multiplayer aspect in RE3 involves a survivor vs. evil mastermind concept where a group of four survivors, with more to choose from, using their combined abilities ranging from being tough to kill to having hacking capabilities in order to escape a series of mini levels, taken from the game.

The mastermind in turn can spawn traps, zombies and other obstacles to prevent the survivors from escaping. The game itself does need some work but with time and testing it can be a solid addition to the game with the features of leveling up in ranking and unlocking new abilities of each character.

Summary

Resident Evil 3 Remake is a continuation of the amazing remakes Capcom has done for the older Resident Evil games and each one has been an experience from start to finish! My biggest gripe with RE3 however is that the game takes very little time to finish (4-5 hours max with a casual play through)… with that being said the higher difficulties after completing the game make it very re-playable. Would a remake of RE4 be likely? I’d rather see a new game entirely with this engine but they could remake all the other games and I’d play them nonetheless.

As always,
